HELAINE KAPLAN PRENTICE
Affiliated Faculty
prenticeinc@earthlink.net |
|
Helaine Kaplan Prentice, ASLA, is a lecturer in City and Regional Planning, and partner in Prentice & Prentice, Inc. Design Consultants. Long a practicing planner, she brings insight on the built environment and experience in the public sector to CCI and her students.
The Oakland Heritage Alliance conferred a lifetime achievement award, citing the "profound effect" of Helaine’s work on the urban fabric and landscape of Oakland. The AIA East Bay Chapter singled out her design accomplishment on the local scene in their first award to a non-architect.
Helaine is co-author, with husband Blair Prentice, of the classic guide Rehab Right, which earned the Gordon Gray Award from the National Trust. Other books include The Gardens of Southern California and Suzhou: Shaping an Ancient City for the New China. The ASLA honored her writing with the distinguished Bradford Williams Medal.
Helaine explores the edge condition where verbal and visual overlap, hence her popular class Power of the Word: Verbal Skills for Visual Thinkers. Tenure as Secretary to the Oakland Landmarks Board¬¬––a magnet for controversial projects––found a happy ending in Historic Preservation in California. Both classes attract students from all disciplines at CED.
A UC Berkeley Mellon Fellow (2003-04), Helaine is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard's Graduate School of Design. She and Blair live in Berkeley and have two adult sons.
