Our projects in this topic area typically focus on ways for disadvantaged neighborhoods and existing residents to benefit from the investment and growth in the region.  One of our specialties is helping commercial corridors in low-income areas develop robust retail mixes.

We are working with Local Initiatives Support Corporation to support its local commercial corridor revitalization program in San Francisco’s moderate income neighborhoods. LISC strives to build the capacity of communities, merchant groups, and community-based organizations to lead ongoing initiatives to strengthen the physical, social, and economic character of the neighborhood. Transit-oriented developments (TODs) are fast becoming reality at major transit stations in the region. Along the BART system alone, eleven communities with stations have completed or approved TODs, and 25 projects are in planning or negotiation phases. CCI received a Community Outreach Partnership Centers New Directions (COPC) grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to research whether and how revitalization is possible without significant displacement in communities — specifically Richmond, California — and to provide technical assistance to groups carefully revitalizing the city’s neighborhoods. CCI is a collaborative partner of Richmond Equitable Development Initiative (REDI) which is focusing now on an effort to infuse the city’s current General Plan update with equitable development principles. MORE...
While the city undergoes its formal General Plan update process, led by city planning Professor John Landis in Fall 2006, a studio of graduate students in UC Berkeley's Department of City and Regional Planning are considering questions and possibilities for the consultants, city government officials and General Plan Advisory Committee. CCI is a core partner in the Richmond Equitable Development Initiative (REDI), a 4-year initiative in Richmond to support a coalition of organizations committed to the principles of equitable development. The partners' vision for Richmond is a community in which every resident has access to affordable housing, and safe, reliable public transit that connects them to living-wage jobs, quality education, a clean environment, health care and other essential services. The lead partners include Urban Habitat, Contra Costa FaithWorks! and the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy, and the initiative is funded by The Ford and The San Francisco Foundations. Initially, CCI received a Community Outreach Partnership Centers New Directions (COPC) grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to study whether and how revitalization is possible without significant displacement in communities such as Richmond, California and to provide technical assistance. CCI is concentrating research and technical assistance on REDI's housing, economic and land use goals in ways that help partners focus on implementation and strategically developing relationships. In August 2006, we hosted Equitable Development and Mixed-Income Communities: Best Practices and Scenarios, a symposium to inspire Richmond policy makers and stakeholders. We also participate regularly in The REDI Leadership Institute for city and county policymakers.
